In eukaryotic cells, pyruvate oxidation and most reactions of the citric acid cycle occur in the mitochondrial matrix. The electron-transport chain and ATP synthase are located in the inner mitochondrial membrane. One important exception is succinate dehydrogenase, which participates in the citric acid cycle while also functioning as complex II in the inner membrane.
