On geologic time scales, by far the largest carbon reservoirs are in the lithosphere, especially carbonate sedimentary rocks and marine sediments. The atmosphere and living biomass contain much smaller amounts, while fossil fuels and buried organic carbon are important but should not be presented as co-equal with the dominant carbonate-rock reservoir.
