The genetic code is nearly universal across life, and homologous DNA or protein sequences provide evidence of shared ancestry. Closely related lineages generally have more similar sequences because they diverged more recently. Molecular clocks use rates of sequence change, often calibrated with other evidence, to estimate divergence time; they do not literally measure the amount of 'shared descent.'
